Bitcoin Crashes Over 50% From Recent Highs - Here’s Our Call on Support

Crypto enthusiasts were crushed over the Thanksgiving holiday when a fight over Bitcoin Cash and very thin liquidity prompted a massive price breakdown from recent highs. This downside move reflects a true price breakdown where Bitcoin bulls have to rethink their future strategies.

Back in October 2018, we warned that price MUST rally above the support level near $6986 in order for any future upside advance to take hold. The following week, we saw a massive price rally that lasted only a few hours and trailed off back below the $6986 support level. While we waited to see if any future price move would prompt a rally above this level, the Bitcoin price levels continued to congest.

The breakdown move over the past two weeks has been massive and hit our first target of $4000 as expected. From the recent highs, the downside move totals -52.81% so far. Our research team believes true support is near $2995 – a further -25% lower from current levels. This equates to a massive -65.85% decline in the past 40+ days.

There may be an opportunity for fresh long trades near the end of this year. We’ll alert you to any opportunities we see in the crypto-currencies as they set up. Right now, we would warn Crypto longs and enthusiasts to be very cautious of any further breakdowns in price. If the $2995 level does not hold as support, we could very easily the $1860 level before the end of January 2019.

Why the Bitcoin Breakdown May Push Prices Below $5000

Recent market turmoil across the global stock markets has refocused investors on the concerns of global economics, trade, and geopolitical issues – away from cryptocurrencies. The biggest, Bitcoin, has been under extended pricing pressure recently and our research team believes Bitcoin will breach the $6000 level to the downside fairly quickly as extended global market downtrends continue.

The premise of our analysis is simple, the factors weighing on foreign investors and Bitcoin investors are that currencies are fluctuating wildly, local stock markets are declining and local economies may be contracting. All of this operates as a means for investors to turn to a “protectionism” stance where they attempt to protect capital/cash and attempt to limit downside risks.

The fact that Bitcoin has yet to break higher and has continued to fall under further pricing and adoption pressure means those investors that were hungry for the next great rally may be getting tired of waiting for this next move – if it ever happens. Our belief is that any downside pressure in Bitcoin below $5800 will likely push many crypto enthusiasts over the end and prompt them to sell out before prices attempt to move down further.

Our research team believes a deeper downside price rotation is setting up in Bitcoin that will push prices below the $5000 level before the end of this year. The uncertainty of the global equities markets are creating an environment where cryptos have simply lost their appeal. There has been no real substantial upside price move over the past 6+ months and the FLAG formation setting up is a very real warning sign that the eventual breakout move could be very dangerous.

Additionally, when we add our proprietary Advanced Learning Cycle system to the research, which points to much lower price rotation over the next 30+ days, we begin to see the very real possibility that Bitcoin could fall below $5000 very quickly and potentially target $4000 as an ultimate low.

As much as we would like to inform our followers that we believe Bitcoin will rally back to $18k fairly quickly, that is simply not the case. All of our indicators are suggesting that Bitcoin will fall to below $5000, and possibly towards $4000, before any real support is found. If you are a bitcoin believer, be aware that you may have a substantial opportunity to use your skills at this price swing plays out. Looking to buy back in near $4000 is much better than trying to hold for an additional $2000 loss.

Visit The Technical Traders to learn more about our research team and resources to help you become a better trader. Be prepared and build your skills to target greater success with our dedicated team. Read some of our other research to see for yourself how well we’ve been calling these recent market moves. Bitcoin Rallies to Upper Channel - What Next?

Even we were concerned with Bitcoin briefly traded below $6k in late June. Yet, the recent upside price move was incredibly quick and the price of Bitcoin ran right up to our upper price channel. We believe this will become a new price peak over the next few days/weeks where the price of Bitcoin should continue to drop from these levels near $7500. We know there are many Bitcoin investors that want to hear us state that it should continue to push higher, but there are other factors at play here that may limit this movement.

The price channels that are currently constraining the price of Bitcoin originate back in February and March of 2018. The low and high price rotation within these months start the points of interest for our research team. From these points, we have continued to identify key price levels that appear to contain breakouts.

You can see from the chart below, the upper BLUE channel line is our downward sloping price channel that is acting like an upper ceiling for the price. Additionally, you can see our “drawn Red and Green arrows” showing what we believed Bitcoin would potentially do over the next few months. We believed that Bitcoin, as it traded lower, towards $6k, may find support and rally (based on our time/price cycles) towards a peak near July 16 (showing as the end of the Green Arrow). From this point, we believe the price of Bitcoin will trail off, heading lower, with the intent to retest channel support near $5700 if the price cannot break through and hold above the blue upper channel.

This longer term daily Bitcoin chart shows a larger picture of our analysis work. You can clearly see the channels that are constraining price at the moment – the BLUE support channel and the RED resistance channel. The most recent lows established a new lower price point for the Blue channel – which indicated a downward sloping pennant formation is in place.

There are two things we want to caution Bitcoin investors and traders about. First, the rotation that we are expecting to complete this pennant formation could happen very quickly within a fairly tight range ($7400 to $5700). For traders, this is an excellent range for some quick profits. For investors, this could create some stress as price rotates.

Second, by our estimates, at least one more low price rotation is required before any real breakout will be attempted. If our analysis is correct, this current price peak will end with prices falling back below $6k, forming another “lower bottom” and rallying again to near the upper price channel (near $6700 or so) before trailing off for the last time – nearing the apex of the pennant formation. We believe the current outcome of this price setup will be a low price breakout, forming a potential wave 5 that should end near or below $5500. After that bottom is reached, we should be looking for a new bottom formation setting up a new advancement leg higher.

Could our analysis change, of course, it could depending on what price action shows us. Right now, this pennant formation and the wave counts are driving our analysis. The Time/price cycle analysis helps us to determine when and where price target/peaks/troughs may happen, but they are not set in stone. If you are a trader and are long Bitcoin, this may be the highest price you will see over the next few months.

If you are an investor and think this is the start of a bigger move higher – we don’t agree with you. We believe we are very close to the final leg lower that should form the new price bottom – at least for a while. Once this bottom forms, we’ll be able to provide a better understanding of what we believe will happen in the future. For right now, our target low for the bottom is $4400 on or near August 20, 2018. We’ll see how it plays out.

We keep a close eye using our proprietary ADL Fibonacci and ADL Cycle forecasting systems using the Bitcoin investment trust which trades like a stock/ETF, the symbol is: GBTC.

Is Bitcoin at a Crossroads?

Back in December I called for an unbelievable $20k target for the Bitcoin when it traded around $15.6k, and ten days later that target was hit. It was one hell of the roller coaster ride that month as Bitcoin then lost almost half of its worth in a matter of days right ahead of Christmas falling to $11k.

Rinse and repeat! The crypto king started to grow again, and then I posted another map at the end of 2017, which implied a pullback to the $16k-$20k area before another huge drop to the $7500 area. Amazingly, both the upside and downside forecasted areas were hit accurately.

The Bitcoin buzz is coming down with the price staying below $10k. It is like a superstar who has seen his best times already and is on the tour to the countries where he is still warmly welcomed as we are not in the $20k euphoria area now (we can call it a “cocaine” time) although you can still buy some pleasant things selling just one coin for more than $7k these days.

In this post, I would like to share with you a familiar pattern I spotted recently on the Bitcoin chart.

Chart: Bitcoin Weekly > On The Crossroads

After losing 70% of the price from the peak ($20k) to the low of 2018 ($6k), there was another good attempt to start the cooling engine of Bitcoin. Crypto-investors took their chance to buy the coin on the panic selling, and the price doubled as there was follow-through demand as people thought that the $20k is in the cards again, some very optimistic guys called for 100K based on exponential growth. But it appeared to be just a good correction and those who didn’t want to quit the coin below the $10k at the first drop, took their second chance to get rid of it during that temporary strength. Then we saw another rally to the $10k and another drop to the $7k.

The volatility evaporated from this market with the smart money pulling out of it. The range of the fluctuations is getting narrower every other zigzag, and it shapes the familiar Triangle pattern (orange). As we are moving closer to the apex of the pattern we should expect the breakout soon.

I highlighted both upside and downside targets of either case. If we get the upside break, then Bitcoin could hit the $14.6k level to build the hope for a revival. On the other hand, if the cryptocurrency goes below the downside of the pattern, then we could reach the $1250, which would mean the oblivion for the coin.

I added the confirmation levels at the $9950 for the upside move and at the $6400 for another drop to avoid false breaks.

No Bitcoin ETF Yet, But There Are Blockchain ETFs

While the Securities and Exchange Commission has yet to approve an actual Bitcoin ETF, it is allowing investors to buy shares of ETF’s which are focused on the technology which makes cryptocurrencies tick, the blockchain.

After the explosion of Bitcoin back in the fall when the price of one coin jumped from around $4,000 to over $19,000, a number of different companies began clamoring to get involved in cryptocurrencies directly or just in the blockchain technology, and that is where these Exchange Traded Funds are focused. The thinking is that while you may not want to invest directly in a cryptocurrency, you may still want exposure to it through the businesses that help it operate.

For example, you could buy Square Inc. (SQ), the payment processing company that a few weeks ago announced it would now allow customers to pay with Bitcoin. Or perhaps it is through a less direct method of buying shares of NVIDIA (NVDA), the semiconductor company, which produces the microprocessors that are needed to make cryptocurrencies a reality. Or lastly, perhaps it just a previous beverage company, Long Island Iced Tea Corp. that now wants to get into blockchain and changes its name out of the blue to Long Blockchain Corp. (LBCC).

The first blockchain ETF to hit the market was Reality Shares NASDAQ NexGen Economy ETF (BLCN) on January 15th, 2018. Then on the 16th, Amplify Transformational Data Sharing ETF (BLOK) began trading. On the 24th, First Trust Index Innovative Transaction & Process ETF (LEGR) began trading, while finally on the 30th, Innovation Shares NextGen Protocol ETF (KOIN) went live.

All four ETF’s share the same language in their fund descriptions which goes something along the lines of a portfolio of equities which have exposure to, are involved in research, development or use, a focus on, or an interest in, blockchain technology.

It would appear all four ETF’s will be competing for the same investors and will likely hold the same stocks, (currently we only know the holdings of the first three, and they are very similar). Furthermore, all four ETF’s have expense ratios within the 0.65% and 0.70% range.

But, while all four ETF’s where rolled out within weeks of each other, BLOK and BLCN have a massive head start regarding capital raised. Currently, BLOK has over $188 million in assets under management, BLCM has over $110 million, while LEGR sits at just around $9 million and KOIN has approximately $3.5 million.

The way the stocks will be picked though may be the only real differential of the four ETF’s. BLOK will be an actively managed portfolio, BLCN will track an index, but with loose freedom for management, LEGR will be straight tracking an index, while KOIN will be using an artificial intelligence machine to pick its investments.

With the funds all being so new, we have limited information on what they hold, and it is hard to make guesses on how they will perform. Furthermore, though it will be interesting to watch them evolve as cryptocurrencies head into what many would consider their second year of life.

Lastly, investors should note that if cryptocurrencies stumble in 2018, these ETF’s could be negatively impacted despite not actually owning the asset. But, most would agree that what is unique about Bitcoin and the others is not what it is, but what makes it work; i.e., the blockchain.

P.S. Those in Canada will not have to wait much longer to get their chance to invest in the blockchain craze as their first ever blockchain ETF will begin trading sometime in February under the ticker HBLK.

Matt Thalman on How Bitcoin Finished An Astonishing Year

If you look at a chart of Bitcoin during 2017, it really only went higher during the first 11 months. The in the middle of November it was as if the cryptocurrency was strapped to a rocket ship as the price shot higher until mid December.

While early investors made a killing on Bitcoin in 2017, the real excitement all happened in December. Bitcoin started 2017 at $996, began the month of December at $10,500, then peaked on December 17, 2017, at $19,206, but ended the year at just over $14,000. When Bitcoin hit its peak, it was up nearly 100% for just the month of December, but even after falling $5,000 in only 14 days, it still ended the month up more than 30%.

While Bitcoin may have only risen 30% in December, it increased more than 1,350% in 2017, with nearly 400% of that gain coming in December and 800% of its coming after November 1st. So what happened in the last two months of the year that caused the price of Bitcoin to rocket higher, in such as short period?

In one word, Exposure!

In early November the general public, those outside the world of finance, began hearing about Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies for the first time. They were being told Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies where the wave of the future. Blockchain technology was going to change how business transactions were being processed. They were being told that investors were making money hand over fist and this was the time to get in. There would only be 21 million Bitcoin’s ever mined, thus not allowing others to manipulate the price and that no one person, government, or central bank controlled this new digital currency.

They were told, buy a cryptocurrency now, and you will make a killing, Bitcoin only keeps going higher, it’s easy money.

None of the information the average person was being told was a lie. It was all true.

This increased exposure hit a tipping point when Thanksgiving rolled around. With the holiday falling on a Thursday, it is believed that the conversation at many dinner tables across the U.S. touched on cryptocurrencies and Bitcoin at some point, because over the course of the following three days coinbase, the largest and most well known cryptocurrency exchange had over 100,000 new accounts open up.

The price of Bitcoin jumped more than $2,000 from November 24th to the end of the month.

The coming December 2017, which will be known as the month of Bitcoin Futures. The two largest U.S. future’s markets both saw their proposals to offer Bitcoin futures approved, and trading of said futures began during the month. The Commodity Futures Trading Commission approved the bitcoin futures and the CBOE, CME, and the Cantor Exchange all began trading Bitcoin Futures during the month.

The reason Bitcoin Futures where so important is because simply by gaining the ability to have a futures market, Bitcoin’s legitimacy increased in a blink of an eye. Furthermore, now that there where Bitcoin futures trading, the big Wall Street funds and investors could now get in on the cryptocurrency action.

The new money would start flowing into Bitcoin through the trading of its futures. This was huge in terms of making the asset more well known and respectable. But, unfortunately, it only hurt Bitcoins greatest attribute, its limited supply.

See Bitcoin Futures, unlike other futures contracts, are not settled with Bitcoins, they are settled for cash. This means when you buy Bitcoin’s through the use of a futures contract; you don’t end up owning Bitcoin’s, you just get the value of the agreed-upon Bitcoins in cash.

Therefore, when Bitcoins are traded with futures contracts, the actual supply and demand of actual Bitcoin’s is not affected. There was one other thing that happened in December which affected the supply and demand of Bitcoin, Bitcoin Cash.

Bitcoin Cash was created when Bitcoin’s blockchain was forked back at the beginning of August. Those who owned one Bitcoin, now owned one Bitcoin and one Bitcoin Cash when the fork occurred. But, Bitcoin Cash was difficult to trade until Coinbase, began offering an exchange in December. Once it was easy to trade Bitcoin Cash, Bitcoin itself saw its price take a hit.

Furthermore, this event publicized the fact that Bitcoin had been forked in the past and that there were a lot of people planning to fork it again in the future. Each time Bitcoin is forked, and a new cryptocurrency begins, it increases the supply of cryptocurrencies available in the market. It hurts the original idea that there would only be 21 million Bitcoin’s ever mined. It hurts the idea that 1 Bitcoin is worth more than 1 Bitcoin Cash, or 1 Litecoin or 1 Ethereum or any of the other hundreds of cryptocurrencies now available.

Bitcoin futures are still new, how Bitcoin Cash or the other cryptocurrencies will affect Bitcoin, and how different world governments and agencies will handle cryptocurrencies is still very much unknown. But, after a wild end to 2017, the cryptocurrency industry isn’t yet showing signs of slowing in 2018. It should be fun to watch it unfold.

Happy New Year and Happy Investing in 2018,
Matt Thalman

Preparing for the Cryptocurrency Swan Event

Our trading partner Chris Vermeulen sent over this great article he put together covering how the current crypto markets volatility might affect the rest of the markets.

Many people have speculated that Cryptocurrencies can go to $10k or higher. Recently, the Chinese government has stepped up policy to regulate and eliminate Crypto ICOs as a means of increased speculation and gray market capital. Additionally, Jamie Dimon, of JP Morgan, stated that Bitcoin is a fraud and that it would “blow up” (MSN > Bitcoin is a Fraud That Will Blow Up Says JP Morgan Boss). What is the truth and what should investors expect in the future? Well, here is my opinion on this topic.

Bitcoin is based on the Blockchain technology architecture. I believe this architecture will continue to be explored under the basis of an open, distributed ledger method of developing opportunities. This technology improvement will likely drive advancement in other sectors of the global market as security and accountability continue to increase. Yet, the growing pains of this technology will likely continue to drive some wild moves over the next few years.

It has been reported that Cryptocurrencies fell $23 Billion in value since the peak. This would put the total valuation of the Crypto market at about $117 Billion near the same peak. Consider for a moment that the Bernie Madoff scandal was near $65 Billion total. Could a Cryptocurrency based “Swan Event” create chaos in the global markets?

In comparison to more traditional investment instruments, the risk exposure of Cryptocurrencies seems somewhat limited. Yet consider this… Many global firms jumped onto the Blockchain bandwagon within the last 12~24 months. This is not just individual investors any longer, this is most of the global financial market.

DATE TIMELINE OF FIRST INVESTMENT INTO CRYPTOCURRENCIES

So, now our “Swan Event” has a bit of depth in terms of risk exposure and breadth in terms of global market reach. What would an extended decline in Cryptocurrency valuations do to these firms and to the confidence in the Cryptocurrency market?

Could a collapse “Swan Event” drive prices back to below $1000 (USD) or further? What would the outcome of such an event be like for the global markets? Would this type of move reflect into the global market as an advance or decline overall? And what would this mean to the bottom line of these financial firms that have invested capital, resources and client’s capital into these markets?

It is our believe that the global markets are, without a Cryptocurrency event, setting up for a potentially massive corrective move. The chart, below, clearly shows what we believe to be a Head-n-Shoulders pattern forming that will likely prompt a breakdown move near October 2017 or shortly thereafter.

We believe this global market correction will prompt selling in weaker instruments and drive a massive “rip your face off” rally in the metals. We believe this move has already started with the formation of the Head-n-Shoulders pattern in the US markets as well as the recent upside move in the metals. The Cryptocurrency “Swan Event” may be the catalyst event that is needed to put pressure on other market instruments (US and Global equities, RealEstate, Consumer confidence/spending and Metals).

Utility Tokens and Cryptos Finally Properly Explained

We have asked our trading partner Teeka Tiwari to explain to us what crypto currencies are and the difference in a crypto currency and the many tokens being offered in the ICO markets right now. Please take a few minutes to read his entire response, when you are done you will have a complete grasp of cryptos and utility tokens....

Cryptos are a brand new asset class. They're completely different from stocks, bonds, and traditional currencies. But that was over 18 months ago. Since then, Bitcoin has risen 1,600% and ether (the coin for the Ethereum network) is up 2,563%.

Perhaps you feel that crypto assets aren't assets at all. Perhaps you've missed out on this incredible run and think it's too late to get in. I want to show you why cryptocurrencies are not like the Dutch Tulip Craze. In fact, we're still in the early days of the cryptocurrency boom.

According to billionaire hedge fund manager Mike Novogratz, the entire crypto market is set to become 25 times larger in the next 5 years. That would be a 2,400+% rise from today. And he's putting his money where his mouth is. Novogratz recently put 10% of his net worth into crypto assets.

That means this asset class still has plenty of room to run and there's still time for you to join the ride. What I'm about to share with you could be very valuable. Like the internet before them, cryptocurrencies have the potential to reshape the economy and they offer a rare opportunity for ordinary individuals to make life changing gains.

The Cryptocurrency Ecosystem
To kick off your education, you need to understand there are two types of crypto assets: cryptocurrencies and utility coins (also called app coins). Think of cryptocurrencies as the digital equivalent of traditional fiat currencies such as dollars, euros, and pounds.

You can use them as a medium of exchange or to store value. The only difference is they're exchanged over the blockchain. Think of utility coins as crypto equities. They're like buying shares in IBM, Walmart, or Apple. Instead, you're buying a stake in a blockchain venture.

Cryptocurrencies and utility coins are similar in that they both operate on a blockchain. The blockchain is like an online public ledger. It's used to track cryptocurrency transactions [Blockchain is a public ledger of all cryptocurrency transactions executed. It's a shared network that can move value around and represent property ownership.]

Now that you know the two types of crypto assets, let me explain how each works.

A New Form of Money
Cryptocurrencies are the crypto asset that most folks are familiar with. So, we'll dive into this one first. The most common cryptocurrencies is Bitcoin. It was created to act as alternatives to fiat (paper) money. Two frequent questions we get are why would anyone buy a cryptocurrency that's backed by nothing and can be created by anyone.

These aren't only fair questions, but smart ones. Here's the thing to remember about money: It's whatever people mutually agree it is. In the past, beads, cowrie shells, silver, gold, and of course paper, have all been used as money. You'll notice that none of them have any intrinsic value.

At the end of the day, a sack of flour has more practical value than a $100 bill or even a bar of gold.
And yet, we value both far more than a sack of flour. That's the mutual agreement we've all come to.
When you think about it, it's not that rational. How does a piece of green paper or a bar of yellow metal hold more value to a human than a sack of flour that can be used to feed a family for weeks?

Because we all agree it does.

In my opinion, paper currency may be the most irrational form of money in human history. At least you can decorate yourself with gold, silver, beads, and cowrie shells. Not only that there's a limit to how much gold, silver, and shells that can be found. There's no limit on the amount of paper money that can be created.

The closest thing to true money (outside of food) is gold. Gold meets several historical rules that we use to judge value. It's prized for its beauty. It's difficult to find. It's expensive to extract. It's also a scarce resource. But there are problems with gold, too. We have to trust that the refineries that certify the gold's purity are telling the truth.

Gold is also difficult to transfer (think of carrying around bags of gold coins or chests of gold bars). And that makes it virtually useless as a practical medium of exchange in daily life. What I mean is you can't buy a new car, house, or even a book with gold bars.

Here's How Cryptocurrencies Are Creating Value
Well designed cryptocurrencies have many features that humans look for when measuring value. Let's talk about them now.

Pre-Programed Scarcity
Cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin are pre programmed to create a set amount of coins. Once this limit is reached, no new coins will be created. This creates scarcity. For instance, the algorithm that governs Bitcoin will create no more than 21 million Bitcoins.

Think about this, there are 35 million millionaires in the world. That means if every millionaire wanted to own an entire Bitcoin, they wouldn't be able to. There literally is not enough to go around. Contrast that with paper money.

With paper money, there's no limit to how much can be created. However, gold is finite. That limits how much new gold can be refined each year. You can see that cryptocurrencies actually have more in common with gold than with paper money.

Difficult to Counterfeit
Cryptocurrencies rely on a technology called the "blockchain." This blockchain uses cryptography to secure transactions. These complex mathematical algorithms make counterfeiting cryptocurrencies almost impossible. Now, compare that to cash. It's estimated that almost a quarter billion dollars of counterfeit paper money sloshes around the U.S. every year.

What about gold? Fake gold will never fool an expert. But counterfeit gold could be passed off to someone with an untrained eye. Cryptocurrencies share two important criteria that give value to traditional assets: scarcity and irreproducibility (hard to counterfeit). These are necessary to create value. But you need something else, too.

A Final Criterion
For a thing to have value, it needs one final thing: Some form of utility. Even art (which some will argue is worth little more than the sum of its parts), creates massive utility by stirring deep emotions in the hearts of people that can appreciate it. That emotional response is a very valuable form of utility. It's the reason people spend billions on art annually. So, what type of utility do cryptocurrencies provide?

Rapid Transfer of Funds
Unlike the transfer of gold or even cash, cryptocurrencies can transfer value almost instantly. And they can do it at very low costs. On the Bitcoin network, you can send $50,000 for about $3. The receiver will get it in about 10 minutes.

Compare that to a traditional wire transfer. The fastest I've seen a wire hit is 24 hours. The cost to send a domestic wire can vary from $35 to $70. International wires can eat up 1%-15% of the total amount of money sent. As far as sending gold, it takes 3-14 days domestically and is very expensive. So, being able to quickly send money anywhere in the world is a very valuable utility that cryptocurrencies possess.

Free from Government Control
Over the years, both gold and cash have been either confiscated or severely restricted through capital controls. Capital controls are government restrictions on your ability to access or move your money.
Even here in the U.S., we have capital controls. For instance, you can't just stroll through airport security with more than $10,000 in cash.

Unless you declare it, you're breaking the law. Even though it's our money, the government insists we report when and where we're moving it. This is an outrageous demand that we accept because there are no alternatives. That is until cryptocurrencies came around.

With cryptocurrencies, we are in complete control of our own funds. We can store them on our own devices free from government intervention. If you store your cryptocurrencies properly, it is impossible for the government to confiscate or control them. This is a truly liberating utility that is very valuable.

Highly Secure Decentralized Payment Network
One common criticism of cryptocurrencies is that anyone can make one. How can something have value if you can create a currency with just a few lines of code? This criticism is spot on.

But remember, anyone can buy a printing press and start making his or her own paper money. What stops people is that no one would use it. The same is true in crypto. Only currencies that gain widespread adoption actually take off.

One of the ways we measure this widespread adoption is by looking at the number of computers that are in a cryptocurrency network. For instance, more than 7,000 separate computers are running the Bitcoin blockchain.

That widespread adoption is a vote of confidence by the market. It's a way for us to objectively identify "good" cryptocurrencies from bad ones. As the network of users grows, so does the volume of cryptocurrency being transacted. This in turn creates a network effect that snowballs.

For instance, $143 million per day of Bitcoin changed hands in 2016. Today, it's over $4 billion per day. The widespread use of this currency is giving it value. Thousands of people are coming together and agreeing to exchange goods and services for Bitcoin.

That is the true test for any currency. Are people accepting it? The answer is a resounding yes. For these reasons, we believe you'll see more people continue to adopt cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin. They offer utility that neither cash nor gold can. A Second Type of Crypto Asset
Earlier, I told you there are two types of crypto assets. The first is cryptocurrencies (which I've just explained to you). The second type of crypto asset goes by several names. Some folks call them "application coins" others call them "utility coins."

The terms are interchangeable. So, what is a utility coin? A utility coin is a crypto asset that is used to secure or deliver a service. Our biggest gains have come from investing in utility coins.

That's why I want to spend the rest of this email talking about them. If you can understand how utility coins work, you can make a fortune in them. In my Palm Beach Confidential service, I have readers that are transforming $300 investments into six figure windfalls by getting in early on utility coins.

Three Themes Driving the Value of Utility Coins
Over 2017, I've been to conferences in Silicon Valley, Boston, Austin, Las Vegas, New York City, Berlin, London, and Copenhagen. During these conferences, I've met with hundreds of people. I've met crypto project founders, venture capitalists, government regulators, central bankers, Fortune 500 executives, hedge fund managers, and digital currency miners.

These are the three primary themes that are driving their research, development, and investment decisions:

  • Fat protocols
  • Interoperability
  • Scaling
If you don't know what these terms mean, don't worry. I'll explain each for you right now.

Theme 1: Fat Protocols
What is a "fat protocol"? I had to ask myself the same question. I stumbled upon this theme at the Consensus 2017 event in New York City in late May. And I heard about fat protocols in more detail in Berlin. Let's start with protocol. In the technology world, a protocol is a set of rules.

For instance, the internet is governed by two protocols: TCP and IP. TCP stands for transmission control protocol. This is a set of rules that governs the exchange of packets of data over the internet. IP stands for internet protocol. This is a set of rules that governs sending and receiving data at the internet address level.

IP by itself is something like the postal system. It allows you to address a package and drop it in the system, but there's no direct link between you and the recipient. TCP/IP, on the other hand, establishes a connection between two hosts, so they can send messages back and forth for a period of time.
Nobody owns TCP/IP. But imagine if someone did. How valuable would the protocols be?

Think about this. According to a Harvard Business Review article, more than half the world's most valuable public companies have built business models on TCP/IP. That's $5.4 trillion dollars in value traced right back to TCP/IP. Think of the biggest names in the internet space: Amazon, Google, Facebook, Priceline, eBay, Netflix, Uber, etc... They are applications, not protocols.

In short: Applications (or "apps") are computer programs that run specific tasks. They include simple desktop apps like calculators, clocks, and word processors to mobile apps like media players, games, instant messengers, and maps. Google's YouTube, Facebook's Messenger, and Microsoft Word are examples of popular web applications. Companies own their applications.

Protocols are the rules computers use to communicate with each other. TCP and IP are examples of widely used protocols. Unlike applications, no one owns computer or internet protocols. For instance, the Ethereum platform has created a protocol for the issuance of crypto tokens (among many other things).

Ethereum has created rules that make it easy to launch and manage digital tokens. That's why more than 50% of new tokens coming to market are using the Ethereum platform. As more projects are launched on the Ethereum network, the demand for ether tokens increases. Said another way, the more the protocol is used, the more valuable the ether tokens become.

These protocols are called "fat" because most of the economic value and profits will be captured at the protocol level. All the tokens launched on the Ethereum platform are only worth $6.8 billion. But the Ethereum platform itself is now worth $34 billion.

Even as more and more companies go "public" on the Ethereum platform, we think Ethereum will be more valuable than the applications that end up running on it. The reason is that the more the protocol is used, the more demand is generated for the underlying protocol token. That's how utility coins like ether gain their value.

Theme 2: Interoperability
Hundreds of new blockchain ledgers are emerging. On top of that, there are hundreds of established centralized ledgers and payment networks. These established payment channels are used by banks and payment providers. We're talking about giants like JPMorgan, PayPal, Visa, and MasterCard.

As the world migrates from a centralized to a decentralized model, how do you get these different networks to communicate with one another? This is a huge problem. That's why we think the next boom will be in companies that allow different ledgers to "talk" to each other.

Imagine there's an English speaker, German speaker, and French speaker in the same room. And no one speaker understands any other speaker. This is the problem right now with blockchains and payment networks. They all "speak" different languages. But what if somebody could create a technology that would allow these different languages to understand one another? In the tech world, this is called "interoperability."

The Difference Between Financial Ledgers and Blockchain Ledgers
Today's financial system requires a lot of overlap. Financial institutions spend a lot of time and money maintaining their systems and even more time and money making sure their systems agree with other systems on common facts.

This is done so that there is no single point of control or single point of failure. The solution is decentralization. It eliminates single points of failure and the necessity for each institution to duplicate the data. The table below highlights the differences between a traditional ledger and a blockchain ledger.

Imagine a version of eBay or PayPal that can work with virtually any digital or fiat payment system. That's the goal of interoperability. Here's the key takeaway, The utility coins that are building in easy to use interoperability will be the ones that become highly valuable.

Theme 3: Scaling
While in Berlin, I met a group of executives from drug giant Merck. These folks oversee Merck's European innovation group. They are tasked with identifying and getting management "buy in" on implementing innovative technology. They have a terrific grasp of the blockchain. They know it could potentially save Merck millions of dollars in costs.

The problem is none of the current blockchain platforms scale. Meaning they just can't operate at the speed and level of complexity Merck requires. This is a common complaint. I've heard it from executives in London, Boston, Silicon Valley, New York City, and now Berlin.

The two most popular blockchains, Bitcoin and Ethereum, can only handle seven and 15 transactions per second, respectively. Like the old 56k telephone modems of the '90s, that's awful. But it would be a mistake to think that it will stay that way forever.

Just as those modems eventually transformed into the high speed internet we enjoy today, it's only a question of time before Bitcoin and Ethereum crack the scaling problem.

Bringing It All Together
The future for cryptocurrencies and utility coins is bright. As more people look to take control of their money, they'll turn to cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and others. As I track the developments in fat protocols, interoperability, and scaling, I'm seeing more and more widespread adoption of utility coins like ether and many others.

But remember: These are still very early days. We'll see massive volatility ahead. It's unavoidable. The key to thriving in the chaos of the early days of a new technology is to remain rational. Friends, hear me when I tell you that it is irrational to expect the crypto market to be stable. Any market this new is highly unstable. The way we manage and profit from that instability is to use small position sizes. With crypto assets, we rely on asymmetric risk.

With crypto we can swing for the fences without putting the rest of our existing wealth at risk. This is a rare opportunity for ordinary people to make life changing gains without having to take life changing risk. That means we risk a small amount of money for a massive potential payoff. This strategy is working well for my readers.

The best part is this trend is just beginning. Right now, the entire crypto market is valued at about $195 billion. Novogratz, the hedge fund billionaire I mentioned earlier, sees the entire market growing to $5 trillion. That's 2,400+% upside ahead. That means we have many more opportunities in front of us to make life changing gains. So get out there. At the very least, buy some Bitcoin and Ethereum.

Remember, you don't have to own a whole Bitcoin. You can own just a fraction of a coin.
And as all these developments unfold – along with others like them – I'm confident that one day you'll be grateful you took action.

Let the Game Come to You!
